Power Bat Tillar, LA Mission Shutout Artist Reyes Named SoCal Player/Pitcher of the Week #6
Cypress College power-hitting first baseman Justin Tillar and LA Mission righthander Uriel Reyes earned CCCBCA SoCal Player/Pitcher of the Week #6 (Feb. 23-Mar. 1).
Tillar, a 5-foot-11, sophomore lefty swinger/righty thrower from Cypress High, led the state last year in home runs (22) and RBI (81), but got off to a slow start this season--until last week. The power switch turned on again for Tillar, who was without a dinger in the Chargers' first 13 games, as he rocketed four home runs, two doubles, scored six runs and drove in seven RBI while batting .583. He hit home runs in three straight games, including two moon shots in a Cypress win at Canyons.
Reyes, a 5-11 sophomore from Polytechnic High in Sun Valley, pitched a 5-hit, shutout with no walks (did hit two batters) and seven strikeouts in the Eagles' 11-0 win at San Diego City. He set the side down in order in five different innings and induced inning-ending double plays in the fourth, fifth and ninth in the complete game effort.
